VE DAY LANCING 2025
🇬🇧 VE Day Lancing 2025 – Captured by John Young Photography
As a Worthing-based documentary photographer, I had the honour of capturing VE Day 2025 commemorations in Lancing, West Sussex—a moving celebration that brought together generations in remembrance, gratitude, and unity.
Marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe, the village of Lancing paid tribute to the bravery and resilience of the wartime generation with a powerful combination of heartfelt remembrance and joyful community spirit.
📸 A Day of Emotion and Togetherness
The morning began with a solemn service at Lancing War Memorial, where veterans, local families, schoolchildren, and civic leaders gathered to honour the fallen. I was privileged to capture moments of reflection during the two-minute silence, the ceremonial wreath-laying, and the emotional expressions of those who lived through the war or whose families had served.
🎉 1940s Spirit Comes Alive
Throughout the day, Lancing was transformed into a vibrant celebration of the 1940s, complete with:
Swing bands and wartime classics echoing through the streets
Residents dressed in vintage attire
Street parties with bunting and traditional cream teas
WWII vehicle displays and interactive history stands
My documentary-style approach allowed me to focus on candid, natural moments—smiles shared over memories, children waving flags, and veterans receiving heartfelt thanks from the younger generation.
🌅 Honouring the Past, Celebrating Peace
As the sun set, the community gathered to witness the Beacon of Peace lighting ceremony—an emotional highlight of the day. It symbolised the enduring legacy of those who fought for freedom and reminded us all why we continue to mark VE Day with such reverence.
